Seven contestants competed for the top honors held at the Chili Cook-Off at the Lee Regional Fair. Winning first place with her Game Day Chili was Anne Faulk, second place went to Betty Spence with her Betty’s blazing Good Hot Chili and third went to Carson Cline for his Bacon-Cheddar Chili. The Sanford Lions Club sponsored the ribbons and premium money for the chili cook off. Once the decision was made and the ribbons awarded observers of the event were invited to sample the winning recipes which disappeared in no time flat.
Judges for the Chili Cook-off were Shane Seagroves, Lee County Emergency Services Director; Scott Knuth, Batalion Commander, Sanford Fire Department; Randy Seagroves, Assistant Chief, NorthView Fire Department; Joel Johnson, Assistant Chief, Deep River Fire Department; and Bill Rogers, Lee County Fire Marshal. Helping with this event were Beverly Tippett, Cris Elliott and Kay Morton.

Mayor’s Choice Bake Off
Winning the Mayor’s Choice cookie contest for youth, grades 3-5 at the Lee Regional Fair were Harrison Riddle, first place; Melanie Larrson, second place and Mary Katherine Wearski, third place. For grades 6-8
winners were Emily Dennis, first place; Morgan Cox, second place; and Duncan Riddle, third place. For grades 9-12 Lara Vest won first place.

Truck and Tractor Driving Competition

The Youth and Adult Truck and Tractor Driving Contests were held at the Lee Regional Fair Tuesday, September 15. The Sanford Lions Club, Lee County High School FFA, Southern Lee High School FFA and North Carolina Cooperative Extension sponsored the contests. Central Carolina Power Equipment provided the tractor and trophies for the youth and adult tractor driving contests. Tommy Brooks and David Dycus judged the event. Wilkinson Automotive furnished the truck and trophies for the truck-driving event. Hobert Wicker and Aaron Fleming judged the truck-driving event. Four youth and 13 adults were involved in the tractor competition while 4 youth and 9 adults competed in the truck-driving event. Educational Fair Booth Winners
This year at the Lee Regional Fair many local organizations and community groups have designed booths in the Educational Exhibit Hall. The booths were judged Monday for their attractiveness, communication of theme, creativity, and educational value.
Lee County Extension and Community Association had two educational booths entered for competition. First place went to Lemon Springs ECA for their booth entitled, “Staycation, The New Way to Go!” Hearts and Hands Quilter’s Guild took second place with their booth “Hearts of Valor” detailing how to make quilts for wartime heroes.
Even 4-H clubs exhibited educational booths this year. First place went to the Home Grown Kids 4-H Club with their booth, “Energy Through the Ages”. The Barn Busters Livestock Club earned a second place ribbon with their booth entitled, “Grasses Galore”. This year’s third place award went to the “Maters n’ Taters club with their educational booth on litter prevention entitled “Be a Man, Put it in the Can”. Fourth place went to the Magetsi 4-H Club with their Booth highlighting countries that speak Spanish entitled “Paises De Habla Espanol.” Other 4-H entries included The Rockin’ Riders with their booth on “Club Information and Horse Care” the Lemon Springs Horse Club with information on the “ United States Equine Rescue League” and the 4-H Adventure Kids with their booth entitled “Learning is Cool!”.
Three vocational education booths were displayed in the exhibit hall this year. First place went to East Lee Middle School FFA with their booth promoting environmental responsibility, “Think Green: Keep Me Clean.” Southern Lee FFA provided fairgoers with Fire Ant information through their second place booth, “The Colony.” Health Occupation Students of America (H.O.S.A.) took third place with their booth focused on health information about, “Swine Flu Prevention”.
The Girl Scouts took first place in the other youth division with their booth on keeping the outdoors beautiful as you go with their booth entitled “Leave No Trace”.
Adult, Community and Civic Organization booths in the exhibit hall included efforts by LeeCAN entitled “Living Healthy Lifestyles”, the Master Gardener Volunteers with, “Who You Gonna’ Call?”, Lee County Health Department with the “Dangers of Drinking and Driving”, Lee County Parks and Recreation, “Meeting Your Physical Activity Needs”, The Asthma Coalition of Lee County with, “Air Quality Flags: What Color is the Air Today?” and Habitat for Humanity with their booth entitled, “Building Green.”
Tabletop exhibits included an entry by the North Carolina Forestry Service encouraging “Forest Fire Prevention and Awareness and Prevention of the Southern Pine Beetle.”
